Male Pussy Willow – Salix caprea
The Willow is a deciduous shrub or tree reaching heights of between 8 to 10m. The flowers are silky soft and silvery about 3-7cm long, the catkins are produced in the early spring before the new leaves appear. There are male and female catkins and they come from different plants. The male catkins mature yellow at pollen release, and female catkins mature pale green. The fruit is a small capsule 5-10mm long containing numerous minute seeds embedded in fine cottony hairs. The seed are exceeding small only about 0.2mm with fine hairs which aid dispersal and they require bare soil to germinate.
