I haven't seen many of these plants before, I'm not sure if it is related to the thistle family, it should be if you go by the sharpness of its spikes, the flower-heads look a bit like teasels. Looking it up I learn that they are properly called Eryngiums. The plant has herbal qualities apparently being considered not only an aphrodisiac but also just the job for dealing with flatulence! A combination not often found in lesser flora...
