NEAR MYTHOLMROYD
This lock on the Rochdale canal is close to the hawk statue in Mytholmroyd which commemorates Ted Hughes in the town where he was born and spent the first seven years of his life.
The canal runs over thirty miles between Sowerby Bridge and Manchester and was opened in 1802. In its day it provided a major conduit for trade in Timber, wool, cotton, iron and coal, today it provides a leisure resource, its well looked-after and seems to be appreciated. As a young boy Ted Hughes fished in the canal, a passion that he maintained till the end of his days.
