Barred Owl (Strix varia varia) - 20240813-03
Large owl, mottled brown and white. Rounded head lacks ear tufts. Black eyes. Listen for its instantly recognizable “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all” call. Favors large, mature forests with deciduous and coniferous trees, often near water. Hunts small animals at night; however, is more active during the day than other owls. (eBird)

We were out with a group of friends when we heard the chickadees and jay go nuts and an owl flew out of a tree just ahead of us. Our first view of the owl was its backside but surprisingly it let us walk right under it to get this great full view. For our friends, it was the first time they had ever seen an owl.
This will be my last post for a while as I am scheduled for eye surgery this week and will have an undetermined recovery period. I need to finish a few other projects before so my visits to Flickr will be reduced for a bit. See you all on the other side :-)
UPDATE: Surgery went well and eye is healing. Should have some vision in about a month. Will take up to 6 months for full recovery. Will have to take it easy for a while still :-)
