Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina) - 20240116-21
Boldly patterned thrush is bright rusty-brown above with black spots on the white belly. Smaller than a robin, but larger than Hermit Thrush. Sticks to wooded areas, often hopping on the ground. More often heard than seen: listen for its incredible, flute-like song. Population is declining; winters in Central America. (eBird)
-----------
This poor bird did not get the memo about wintering in Central America. Instead, he hung around Ottawa near some feeders. He was doing okay until the really cold weather came in. It looks as though some feathers became frozen to the perch and he lost them when he pulled free. He was active and feeding when we saw him, but his health began to decline. Although there were efforts to catch him and take him to the Wild Bird Care Centre, he has not been seen for the past week. Hopefully he is safe somewhere.
