May was a month of pushing the envelope for me in many ways. I had the luxury and benefit of the talented Kika Lek being present most days, and I gave her one major assignment. Get me out of the studio again. Many people have stated that it seems the studio is my comfort zone. I don't feel that way. They forget that I shot for years, decades even, without a studio, without monolights. So I gave Kika a D200 with a manual focus 50mm f/1.4 and we went abroad.
In return, Kika got to see how I build images within the studio. How I mix the magic of GIMP with forethought in shooting to arrive at a preconceived image. She got to see how I work with people to bring out the best images I can. And she saw that it really isn't knowledge of lighting, camera settings, or post production that makes compelling images of people. Those are just tools to be used at will. It's the dance between the photographer and subject, and the connection with the viewer that holds the magic.
