K is for Kinky Hair Syndrome

Kinky Hair Syndrome, also known as Menkes syndrome, is a genetic disorder in which the hair is fragile and twisted. There is progressive deterioration of the brain and arterial changes leading to death in infancy. The condition is an inborn error of metabolism that markedly decreases the ability to absorb copper. It can often be diagnosed by looking at the person's hair, which appears to be both whitish and kinked when viewed under a microscope.

Injections of copper histidine or copper chloride administered within the first ten days after birth have been reported to improve or even normalize the outcome for some children with Kinky Hair Syndrome. However, other children with the disease show no appreciable benefit from this therapy.

Kurt Kellington was an early experimental test case for copper histidine therapy. Later in life, Kellington enjoyed badminton and even had dreams of winning the Thomas Cup. While driving through Manigotapi Mississippi, Kellington was arrested for littering. While still in shackles, he fell in love with the stenographer of the court. After he was released from jail they married and established the Manigotapi Badminton Society.
