The bodies, the names, the souls

International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27th, 1945 - January 27th, 2023

I've matched an old image of bodies buried and burned in Auschwitz with the vault of the Hall of Names at the Yad va-Shem, the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem.

The Hall of Names is entirely covered with photographs of some of the victims, mainly identity documents, found after the war in various archives of nazism and fascism deportation.

The Memorial was built to return to the victims their names and faces, thus to thwart the stated nazi & fascist intention of murdering them and wiping out their memory. In Jerusalem the millions swalloved into the holocaust have now a place where they are commemorated for generations to come.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day, is an international memorial day on 27 January commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War.

It commemorates the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jewish people, 5 million Slavs, 3 million Poles, 200,000 Romanians, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9,000 homosexuals by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.

On 27 January 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the Red Army.
