First Baptist Church is one of only several buildings left standing in Mayfield after the tornado ripped through in December 2021.

When the tornado hit, the church pastor, his family and another staff member took shelter in a tunnel underneath the church. The pastor said in an interview that it was disorienting to see the town after he emerged from shelter. He was quoted saying "I thought something was wrong with me. I was confused. I couldn’t see any buildings. I couldn’t see buildings I’ve seen my whole life."

Although the tornado hit nearly a year and a half ago now, progress is still being made to repair the church. While the exterior of the building survived, the interior has to be completely remodeled due to extensive roof damage. It is said that the time-span for repairs will be nearly a three year process from the date that the tornado hit. While the repairs continue, the church members hold strong to their faith and have adapted. The church still meets in rented space and Sunday School is held at different businesses and homes throughout the community.
