BASIL is Best

A new fleet group 1-50 came into service gradually from the end of 1972 and BAS IL (affectionately named owing to its number plate) would spend its entire public service life with ECT at Longstone depot, until its demise in 1990. Since then BFS 1L has been looked after by the Lothian Bus Consortium and has travelled extensively, both here in Scotland and on the Continent.

Basil ran around on the internal service at this year's Lathalmond rally and, typical of the Atlantean AN68's you could hear its heartbeat and personal characteristics from quite a far!

I was taken to the Open Day at Shrubhill in 1973 to see for the first time Atlantean AN68 number 2 - compared to the Atlantean PDR1 / A1's it seemed huge and a bit bulky. We soon started to enjoy them as they arrived in hundreds...dominating until January 2000.
