Volvo 138 at Mayfield
Having lived in Edinburgh all of my life I continue to be impressed at the widening carpet of services Lothian Buses provide to outlying areas with more and more new village names appearing on bus destination screens.
Until very recently I honestly thought when seeing service 29 going to Mayfield that this was infact a part route service heading to Newington, on the south side of the city centre! Imagine therefore my arrival here for this photograph of fleet number 138 at the end of a long diagram for the 29: from Silverknowes down at the seaside (at the north end of Edinburgh) all the way up through town and out past Dalkeith, through places called Gorebridge, Polton Mill and ending here at Mayfield. Well it's not actually the Mayfield terminus as what's described as the 'Mayfield loop' had to be forgotten about on this day as a result of the snowy conditions which caused considerable chaos for everyone on the roads.
In any case we see here a most picturesque lay-over for any driver after this long and winding route well outside Edinburgh's natural boundaries.
In 2007 fifteen of these single deckers were introduced and branded for service 29 (Silverknowes to Gorebridge/Mayfield), but in 2009 it was clearly felt that only 12 vehicles would be required for the route and so the branding 'Best Deal' was painted over on 136, 137 and 138 as we see here, and so now showing more of this rather attractive brighter red livery.
