Me 1957
The young Vermont Ferret poses in baggy jeans and a hastily tucked-in flannel shirt outside our home at the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. And based on the shadows and my weary expression, I'd guess that this was taken after a full day of adolescent hellraisin' on one of those late October afternoons when it was both cool and warm at the same time.
Tiz took this the same day as this one of sweet little Ruthie.
I'm standing on the front lawn of Mr. Daniel's side of the duplex we shared with him and his wife. Students would work off their demerits on their day off from school by doing yardwork for the teachers with campus homes (the bachelors lived in the dorms with the students) and that included raking leaves and mowing lawns. When Sen. John McCain was a student at EHS in the early 1950s, he did yardwork for us almost every week, since he was always getting caught doing shit he shouldn't have been doing.
Sis remembers seeing McCain raking leaves on our front lawn one day when she was ten and went out to talk with him. They complained to each other about how they were always getting in trouble - Joe Latham's nickname for Sis was "R.H." for "Raise Hell", and McCain was the school's resident troublemaker.
Sis' headstrong behavior eventually became too much for Daddy, who sent her off to board at St. Catherine's School in Richmond, Va - a wise move on his part because St. Catherine's straightened her out.
John McCain, on the other hand, became a Republican. But he genuinely loved our family, and for that we love him too.
