The causes of pervasive poverty in rural India have been clearly identified. Yet, for many reasons - social as well as political - the proper solutions have not been fully implemented yet.
Despite a rapid change in mentality, patriarchy is still prevalent in rural India. As such, many women - mothers, daughters, wives - still heavily rely on their husband, or their children, to survive. In that regard, the death of a husband, or of supporting children, is a tragedy for the surviving family members. This old woman is a widow, and her children - who live in a remote city - can no longer take care of her. She lives off the charity of other villagers.
