Sunset from the air

From the archives, I found one nice looking "window seat" shot which I had never uploaded to my photostream.

This was an aerial sunset capture of the South China Sea as the plane banked west and began its descent towards the Kota Kinabalu International Airport from the southeastern town of Tawau, Sabah.

This was one of Malaysia Airlines' newly acquired Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which you can tell from the vertical winglet. Due the thick low cloud cover, the flight was mildly rocked with sporadic air turbulence.

That wasn't so bad as the very hard and bouncy landing which we experienced upon touch down. Upon disembarkation I told the head steward to thank "Captain Kangaroo" for his landing skills. He must have been a newbie at flying this aircraft. 😁

Updates:

It wasn't years later that I learned that a hard touchdown is a standard procedure whenever the runway is wet from rain. I now recall that it was lightly drizzling when we landed at the airport.

To ensure an optimal grip, the pilot will literally slam the tires into the tarmac so that the aircraft would not flutter and float dangerously over the runway. His goal is to land the plane at the correct spot and not overshoot the length of the runway.
