Tapas!
John and I were a little daunted to try the lively, loud, vibrant tapas scene in San Sebastian--and we never encountered another English speaker in any of the tapas bars--but we were successful! Here's how it works: The frenetic bartender serves you beer or wine, whichever you want, and gives you a plate. Then you just pick up whatever you want from the bar and eat it. When it's time for "la cuenta," you recite to the bartender what you ate. Which means you need to know how to say it all in Spanish. From our October trip to Spain.
