Abolition of Tobacco Monopoly Monument

 

In March 1782, Governor Jose Baco y Vargas, by virtue o the royal decree of February 9, 1780, established the government tobacco monopoly. The monopoly increased government revenue and stimulated the tbao industry. Hwever, it led to many abuses by various government officials. In 1882, the monopoly was abolished by the royal decree of June 25, 1881 during the incumbency of governor Fernando Primo de Rivera. This brick monument is erected by the people as an expression of joy over the abolition of the tobacco monopoly.
