I have been struggling with the Stranger project recently. I feel like the very next portrait I take must be earth shattering otherwise it will be a failure, and this has lead to hesitation.
Extremely silly notion? Of course, but I am sure others have been through it. Of course I know why I am feeling like this - my standards have been raised since I've started the project and I am no longer settling for anything other than my very best. I guess this is a good thing. To paraphrase Ira Glass, if you have taste, you know when you see crap! and thats why you have to keep working, to reach the standard you know you must be at. Ah well maybe - or maybe you just get out there and shoot.
So with the view of just getting on with it, I found an interesting background, decided I wanted to shoot someone in a suit against it, and waited.... I saw Sean, who is studying, and undertaking a finance internship, walking with his mate and heading to a function. Although he didn’t have a lot of time I managed to tell him about the project and take a few quick pics. Not the calm measured-get to know your subject as you shoot-like they tell you in the books- type encounter, but still, back on the horse!!
Thanks for your time Sean! I hope you like the portrait and thanks for being part of the journey. Please get in touch if you would like a copy.
This picture is #14 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page.
