Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk at the V&A Spring 2020

“Kimono, 'Engagement Ribbon'
Shigemune Tamao (b. 1981)
Surrealist imagery adorns this formal furisode kimono, making what is normally a conservative garment subversive. The swans, roses, butterflies and bumble bees are in keeping with a garment for
a young woman, yet the mysterious scene at the hem is slightly sinister. Tokyo-based Shigemune Tamao created this garment after getting engaged. She had it made in Kyoto, at the studio of fellow contemporary kimono designers Modern Antenna.
Designed in Tokyo, made in Kyoto, 2015
Kimono: figured silk, digital printing
Obi: brocade silk (nishiki)
V&A, FE.43,44-2018”
