The fern dominating the forest floor in this beech forest landscape in Canterbury, New Zealand, is piupiu (crown fern) - Blechnum discolor. Centre of picture is a standing dead beech tree the black bark covered in sooty mould and where the bark has peeled off the tree is bleached white by the elements.
