Kiokio (Cape fern - Blechnum novaezelandiae) reflected in the waters of Colls dam
Colls dam is located in the Nelson Creek forest and recreation area, a conservation reserve on an area of land once a large gold mining site more than a century ago. The forest has regrown and now mature trees grow out of the deep trenches carved through the local stone. Colls dam was created to build water pressure for sluicing soil from the gold works to wash the gold bearing soils/sands through the riffle boxes. Now it is surrounded by lush temperate rainforest, ferns, shrubs and tall forest trees.
