Torea - pied oystercatcher - Haematopus ostralegus finschi
Photographed on the shores of the Heatchote/Avon Estuary, Christchurch.
The South Island pied oystercatcher is only subspecifically different from the European bird. In New Zealand it breeds only in the South Island inland mainly in shingly riverbeds. They move to the North Island in very large numbers for the winter.
