The clear areas in this picture is the bed of a high country periodic waterhole that is dry most of the time but floods occasionally. This area of O Tu Wharekai / Hakatere Conservation Park is noted for the number of species of plant that have evolved to cope with both dry, heat, intense cold and periodic inundation.
