Poynter Nature Reserve Canterbury New Zealand
The Poynter Nature Reserve wedged between the Kaiapoi and Waimakariri Rivers near Christchurch, New Zealand, is one of the few remaining remnants of a vast plains and esuarine swamp associated with the lower Waimakariri catchment prior to European settlement. Management and regeneration planting is helping this little reserve recover. Eventually weeds like willow will be removed but currently the willow are doing the job taller native trees used to do of shading the wetland and helping retain the water. The landscape is a mix of exotic and native plants, wetland, braided shingle riverbed, scrubland and forest and has a wide variety of native and exotic birds in residence.
