Although these flowers are not native to New Zealand and are actually invasive weeds from garden escapes, they add a blaze of colour to this seaside landscape. The locals recognise the threat though, so while the area in front of their baches is allowed to bloom, they voluntarily weed the boundary with the adjoining nature reserve to preserve the reserve's native dune and shingle spit landscape.
