Lake Ellesmere wetlands - Harts Creek - Canterbury New Zealand

This beautiful walk follows Harts Creek to a bird hide at Lake Ellesmere. It is open to the public but on privare land and has been generously planted with native plant species. The deep creek is bordered by marshy paddocks and thickly forested (willow and native mix) wetlands bfore opening to raupo reed beds and the lake itself. It is a haven for birds including some rare species like the bittern and (especially in winter) the crested grebe, plus numerous flocks of waterfowl and seasonal birds that visit in the spring and summer. Year-round residents include pukeko, stilt, swan, ducks of various sorts, harrier, swallow and many others.
