Australian Magpie - Gymnorhina tibicen

Introduced to New Zealand from Australia in the ten years from 1864. Locally common in hill country and arable farmland with shelterbelts of pines, macrocarpas or gums. The subject of one of New Zealand's most famous poems by Denis Glover. Infamously territorial, they will readily attack humans in nesting time. Beautiful song, flute-like and carolling, described by Glover as 'quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle'. Regarded as a pest by some conservationists because of their impact on native bird populations, usually through harassment rather than predation.
