Time to fly! - Karearea fledgling first flights

This series of shots captures only a few minutes in the life of a karearea chick (New Zealand Falcon - Falco novaeseelandiae) as it rests, exercises its wings and then takes off on one of its first faltering flights then return to its roosting trunk for a breather its strenuous efforts.

The chick is a fully wild bird, but was banded a few days after hatching as part of a wildlife monitoring programme.
