Kereru - New Zealand pigeon - Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae

Feeding on tree lucerne in my Little River garden.

Tree lucerne in New Zealand has a mixed reputation. The Department of Conservation lists it as an invasive weed of concern, but other authorities point to the tree lucerne as providing high protein foliage for New Zealand pigeon, especially in winter.

I allow one plant only in my garden and the kereru/NZ pigeon are constant visitors.
