Pingao (golden sand sedge - Desmoschoenus spiralis) dunes
The distinct pingao dunes of Kaitorete spit. Native pingao - golden sand sedge - is highly threatened and Kaitorete Spit is one of its last strongholds. Desmoschoenus spiralis. DOC tries to keep these dunes weed free but it is pretty much impossible to control the hare's tail grass (Lagurus ovatus) evident in this picture which is a serious invasive introduced weed of our dune and coastal systems. Introduced marram grass and yellow lupin are also serious plant pests here, as are idiots who ignore the "no vehicles" signs and take their off-road vehicles onto these dunes which destroys habitat and encourages erosion.
