winter raupo - Lake Emma series
Lake Emma is one of the three largest lakes in the Ashburton Lakes District (along with lakes Heron and Clearwater). This series follows the lake shore in a clockwise journey east, south, west, north. The lake was largely frozen over apart from a few patches of clear water, which possibly accounted for the lack of birdlife. In summer it hosts huge flocks of black swan, canada geese, mallard duck, native scaup and the rare New Zealand crested grebe. It's also an excellent brown trout fishery, and duck shooters ply their luck in autumn.
The lake and its important red tussock wetlands fall within the Hakatere Conservation Park.
