Ashburton Lakes region Canterbury New Zealand

his is Rohan country (as in the Rohan horse riders' nation in Lord of the Rings). The Edoras village and golden hall was built here for the second and third of the movie trilogy. You can just make out Mt Sunday (the rocky outcrop that was the site of the village and hall set) just left of centre in the middle distance, dwarfed by the high mountains beyond.

In reality it is the junction of the Potts and Rangitata Rivers with the high peak of Mt D'Archiac in the distance and on the edge of the Hatatere Conservation park in the Ashburton Lakes District, Canterbury New Zealand
