Pencarrow Coastal Trail and Parangarahu Lakes Area

Across Wellington harbour from the city is the eastern shore of the harbour stretching from Petone at the inland end, through Eastbourne, and down to Pencarrow head. Just south of Eastbourne the road ceases and becomes a walkway, leading along the coast to the Pencarrow lighthouse and then inland to Lakes Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera, collectively known as the Parangarahu lakes. The rocky, storm-wracked coast is a haven for seabirds and the sheltered lakes, separated from the sea only by a shingle bar, are an important wetland habitat and home to both introduced and indigenous waterfowl.
