Kaki - black stilt - Himantopus novaezelandiae

Critically endangered the kaki (black stilt) is regarded as the rarest wading bird in the world.

Endemic to New Zealand and, once widespread throughout the country, breeding is now largely confined to the Mackenzie Country with some birds migrating to estuarine areas for winter.
