Tui - Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae
Photographed at Little River, Banks Peninsula..
Tui became locally extinct on Canterbury's Banks Peninsula about 30 years ago. In 2009/2010, with a lot of native plant restoration having occurred in the intervening years, tui were reintroduced to the peninsula. The programme has been a success and this striking songbird is once again seen and heard in the Banks Peninsula forests and even some rural gardens, and the population is increasing.
