Lake Hawea New Zealand

From the dry rockies at the eastern edge, we drove through central Otago to its western exit beyond the lakes. The great mountains surrounding much of Central Otago, especially on its western and northern boundaries, produce a lot of snow, ice and glaciers. So although Central Otago is near to a desert with very little rainfull the snow and glacier melt means it is crossed by great rivers, many sourced from large glacial lakes such as Lake Hawea.
