kaikoura Cave 452

This small but beautiful cave contained many calcite formations, stalgmites, stalactites, straws, flows, crystals etc.

The unique colour of the formations is due to a high presence of iron oxide in the stone through which the waters leech.

This is an ancient sea cave, rather than a water-formed cave. The cave has survived the tectonic uplift and the formations formed once it was above sea level, they range in age from quite recent to many thousands of years old.
