Riroriro (grey warbler) nest building series

This series of shots shows a pair of riroriro (grey warbler - Gerygone igata) building their nest. It is shaped rather like a Russian stacking doll with the entrance in the rounded top and the main body of the nest in the lower half. The nest is comprised largely of moss and lichens stitched together with cobwebs. The riroriro is endemic to New Zealand and is this nation's second smallest bird. It has a beautiful song and is a herald of spring when the male starts his territorial singing which in spite of the tony size of the bird, is a powerful song heard throughout the forest. Indeed, the grey warbler is usually heard long before it is seen.
