Banks Peninsula is an extinct volcanic formation comprising two large volcanoes that have been drowned by the sea forming the Lyttelton and Akaroa harbours. The hills are steep and crowned with rocky volcanic crags and the many bays are backed by steep, black volcanic cliffs eroded by the sea.
