Pointless destruction

This photo is of three tarapuka (black-billed gull, Larus bulleri) which have been (illegally) shot with an air rifle. Tarapuka are endemic to New Zealand and the world's most endangered gull. There was no reason to shoot these birds. They are not a pest of cafes and picnics like some gulls, they don't foul city paths (they tend not to gather in cities) and they are a useful controller of agricultural insect pests. The only possible reason for shooting them can only be because someone decided it would be fun to do. Gulls often suffer bad press, and unfortunately this highly endangered gull is lumped in with that reputation.
