The Ashley Estuary just north of Christchurch city in the South Island of New Zealand is a wetland of international significance. More than 115 different species of birds have been recorded there including some of New Zealand's most rare and endangered endemic species such as the tarapuka (black-billed gull), tarapiroe (black-fronted tern), ngutupare (wrybill), and the kaki (black stilt).
