Lake Roundabout - Ashburton Lakes - New Zealand

O Tu Wharekai (the Ashburton Lakes) are a nationally significant wetland and a cultural taonga (treasure) for Ngai Tahu Iwi Maori.

The region is known for its unique kettlehole landscape - caused by the weight of ice in the last ice age glaciation - where sometimes small sometimes very large bowl shaped depressions in the land have evolved a unique ecosystem where plants have to cope with being alternately baked dry in summer, drowned in winter and a short period in spring and Autumn when conditions are right for growing, blooming and seeding. The larger kettleholes form large but shallow and swampy lakes such as Lake Roundabout.
