The stunted forest - Nina Valley

This forest in the Nina Valley, Lewis Pass National Reserve, Canterbury, New Zealand, features stunted and warped beech trees only a third to half the height they should be for their age. The ground is also bare of any undergrowth except mosses and lichens and the occasional hardy grass.

Some movement of the earth has caused this previously fertile area to change and now, little new growth is possible and the old trees are ageing and dying before their time.
