Otira Valley - Arthur's Pass National park, New Zealand

Only just off the alpine highway that connects the east and west coasts of ther South island of New Zealand at Arthur's Pass, the Otira valley is truly wild, even dangerous especially in winter and the spring thaw, and spectacularly beautiful. It's ready access off the main road makes it a popular tramp and the track also gives access to some higher climbing routes and peaks. The valley is home to a multitude of plant and animal species including some very rare birds such as blue duck and the rock wren.
