Stunted beech forest Nina Valley Lewis Pass New Zealand

This strange, open forest with very little in the way of undergrowth, and trees barely twice the height of a man, is in the Nina Valley near Lewis Pass in new Zealand. Beech forest is normally much taller and with a mixed undergrowth of smaller trees and other understorey plants. This strange, dry, open landscape with its varied moss and lichen forest floor is a feature of the Nina Valley.
