Mousehole Harbour

Every year the village attracts visitors from the World over to see the famous Mousehole lights. Whales and sea monsters appear from beneath the waters, Santa rides his sleigh pulled by his ever reliant reindeers, the Mousehole Cat sits proudly on the sand, bubbles fizz from a glass of wine on the side of The Ship Inn.

A dish unique to Mousehole - Starry Gazey Pie - lights up beneath the Ship Inn pub which is prepared and eaten on 23rd December- Tom Bawcock's Eve.

Legend has it that residents were starved of fish because of a stormy winter and no fisherman had been out. Two nights before Christmas Tom Bamcock a local fisherman, braved the storm and through some miracle caught 7 types of different fish and brought them back to the village.

He became a local hero and every year is honoured because of his courage on the 23rd December when the Starry Gazey Pie is cooked at The Ship Inn and brought out at midnight.

On December 19th all the lights are turned off 8.00pm in rememberence to all those who lost their lives on the the Penlee lifeboat - Solomon Browne in 1981 when it was called out to assist the newly commissioned MV Union Star. The lights are then switched back on again at 9.00pm.
