Dunwich Dynamo 2012 - Arrival

The Dunwich Dynamo is a turn-up-and-go challenging free-entry overnight 120 mile bicycle ride on-tarmac from London Fields in Hackney, London to the lovely, lonely Suffolk beach at Dunwich. It’s not a race. It’s unsupported. There’s no van following. It’s a long way. I'm quietly terrified, especially as apart from my normal 10 mile each way commute I've neither had the time or opportunity to train for the event... and I've been ill over the last week.

The last 20 miles of the ride was hard work, there were many hills. I got too hot. Every hill was a mountain.

The final road leading to Dunwich beach was buzzing with inconsiderate motor traffic arriving for and departing with cyclists. It was irritating after having the road system all to ourselves for so long.

We arrive. It is 9:30am. No fanfare. No welcome. No attractive women handing us a bottle of something fizzy. The arrival almost seems an anti-climax. Others look like they have been here for hours - they probably have. The queue to load bikes into trucks already snakes its was round the car park and onto the beach.

We get ourselves into the Flora Tearooms and have a full English breakfast with orange juice.

The service is quick and the quality is good. We wolf it down.
