City of London modelled in Blender

Using the newly released Open LiDAR data for England. DEM was clipped to the boundary of the City of London in QGIS (boundary data copyright OpenStreetMap contributors). 2m resolution and quite noisy, but ok at this scale...

Rendered using an orthographic camera, not perspective, so heights do not get smaller the further away you go. So the wonderful Father Ted joke with 'these are small, and those are far away' doesn't apply here :)

Material is 50% ambient occlusion, 50% diffuse. Gives a more chalky appearance, rather than the waxy/soapy look you get with subsurface scattering... and much faster to render.

I hope there's data for St Michaels Mount, I want to make my own Minas Tirith. ;)
