Phantom 08 604.

Phantom 08 604 (Gronk)

Phantom 604 was built in Derby in the year 1959 by British Railways.

Phantom 604 is a Class 08 shunter, they were built over a ten year period between 1952 and 1962 by the British Rail works at Crew, Darlington, Derby, Doncaster and Horwich.

More freight was being moved by road and there was not the requirement for so many freight trains so the need for shunters in the late sixties diminished.

There are approximately a hundred 08 diesel shunters working today, mostly in sidings and depots, at least sixty more are located on heritage railways and museums.

Phantom 604 is now used for shunting in the yard at Didcot Railway Centre and sometimes works demonstrating goods trains and very occasionally passenger trains at Open Days and Special Events.

Photographed at Didcot Railway Centre which is a living Museum of the Great Western Railway.

The centre is an industrial museum, the buildings and exhibits are preserved as far as possible in their original state.

My friend Dave Denby and I recently had a day at the centre, I have to say it is a fantastic place with lots of photographic opportunities.
