University College London

The Wilkins Building, UCL, on Gower Street, Bloomsbury. Designed by William Wilkins (1827-9).

Originally opened in 1828 as the University of London, University College was set up as a secular institution - the first university in England and Wales open to non-Anglicans, and was modeled on German universities.

The building seen here is in fact a compromise. Wilkins' original competition-winning design was a grand, E-shaped scheme, with a Corinthian portico and 3 domes, around a large quadrangle screened from Gower street by Doric columns.
