Back to album

As summer turns to autumn, the common brown house-spider seems to become more active. I guess they're looking for somewhere to shelter from the cold and damp. This not-so-little scuttler chose my bathroom (which is preferable to finding them on the ceiling, above my bed!) I found it a cosy spot in the garden to relocate to (after taking around 30 pictures). These are the best of the bunch. The coin in the background is an English 1p piece (approx. 2cm diameter) and I estimate its leg-span, in the 'at rest' position, to be around 7.75cm.

P.S. They're not harmful - to humans. :-D

P.P.S. I've just looked these up on Wikipedia and it would appear that this is probably a "Giant House Spider", male, and scuttling around in search of a mate. Well; we'll have none of that thank you very much! :-D
